It is the goal of Project SPEAK to raise awareness through education of administrators, faculty, staff, students and their families of the colleges and universities located in Volusia, Flagler and Seminole counties, Florida, of the signs of depression, substance abuse and suicidal ideation in order to prevent suicides among college students.

Daytona State College in cooperation with Seminole Community College and the University of Central Florida have joined together to conduct activities of Project SPEAK to establish and enhance infrastructure that will foster an environment to lower suicide rates and increase help-seeking on commuter college campuses. Project SPEAK is being funded under a Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention Grant from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).
